Can I still use Instagram checkout in the UK?

The short answer

No. Checkout inside Instagram has gone everywhere rather than being withheld from Britain. Meta’s Business Help Centre states that as of September 2025, Shops on Facebook and Instagram now use website checkout, with customers now directed to your own website to complete the purchase. A shop keeps its home page, collections and product pages. Anybody waiting for Instagram checkout to arrive in the UK is waiting for a product that no longer exists anywhere.

What Meta changed

Meta’s notice is titled About changes to Shops and checkout on Facebook and Instagram. Its opening line states that as of September 2025, Shops on Facebook and Instagram now use website checkout, adding that if your shop used checkout on Facebook or Instagram, the checkout method has been updated or your shop is invisible. That second clause is the one to act on, because an untouched shop may simply not be showing to anybody.

The notice goes on to say the shop still has rich discovery and consideration surfaces such as the home page, collections and product pages, while customers are now directed to your own website to complete the purchase. Meta frames this as giving the seller more control of the checkout experience. It also lists management of the post-purchase experience in Commerce Manager as discontinued, with metrics related to purchases on Meta no longer applicable.

The UK specifics most sources miss

Meta’s supported countries page for Shops puts the United Kingdom in an open beta tier rather than the full experience, with the caveat that some sellers may not have full capabilities. The United States is the only country listed in the full tier. So a UK brand should expect the shop to work while treating any individual feature as something to verify rather than assume from a guide written for American sellers.

The hard requirement is the checkout URL. Meta’s setup page states that a checkout URL transitions customers from your shop on Facebook and Instagram to the checkout process on your website, then states plainly that you must add a checkout URL for your shop to be visible. Meta also publishes a timeline, saying its review process can take up to 4 weeks, which belongs at the front of a launch plan rather than the back.

What to do with the channel now

Treat it as discovery feeding your own checkout, because that is what it now is. Product tagging on posts, Reels and Stories still works and the tap goes to your website, so the sale is made or lost on the page that tap lands on. That means a product page that loads fast, shows price and delivery clearly and does not ask somebody on a phone to pinch and zoom to find the size.

Then sort the permissions before anything else, because permissions are what actually delay these launches. You need full control of the business portfolio, the Page if you use one and the catalogue. In most companies those sit with three or four different people. Meta notes that if you only want to sell on Instagram you do not need to create or provide a Facebook business Page when creating your shop, which retires a rule plenty of guides still repeat.

Quick answers

Is Instagram checkout coming back?

Meta publishes no return date. Its notice states that Shops on Facebook and Instagram now use website checkout, with customers directed to your own website to complete the purchase. Plan on website checkout being the model and build the product page to carry the sale.

My Instagram shop has disappeared. Why?

Meta’s notice states that if your shop used checkout on Facebook or Instagram, the checkout method has been updated or your shop is invisible. A missing checkout URL is the common cause, because Meta states you must add one for your shop to be visible. Check that first in Commerce Manager, then check the four week review status.
