Use the native integrations first
Shopify’s Meta, Google and TikTok sales channels all support server-side conversion sending as standard. They handle deduplication against the browser pixel automatically and need no developer. For most stores under seven figures of revenue, this is the whole answer.
Check the setup rather than assuming. Open Meta Events Manager and look at event match quality and the deduplication warning. A store sending both browser and server events without a shared event ID double counts, which quietly ruins the reported return on ad spend.
When a server container earns its keep
A Google Tag Manager server-side container costs a cloud bill plus setup and maintenance. It earns that back on stores running several ad platforms, sending custom events or enriching conversions with margin and lifetime value. Control over what data leaves your estate is the other honest reason.
Below roughly £30,000 a month in ad spend, the native integrations plus clean UTM discipline usually get you the same decisions. Server-side tagging is a genuine improvement, and it is also a project people buy before they need it.
Build consent handling in from the start
UK and EU traffic needs a consent banner wired to Shopify’s Customer Privacy API, with Google Consent Mode v2 signals passed through. Without it, Google advertising features degrade for European users and your remarketing audiences shrink.
Server-side tagging does not let you ignore consent. Sending a conversion from your own server for a customer who declined tracking is still a compliance problem. Configure the container to respect the consent state it receives, then document it.
