Why does ChatGPT recommend my competitor and not me?

The short answer

Almost always because your competitor appears in the sources the model drew on and you do not. Find the answer it gives, identify which listicles, reviews and comparison pages name them, and get yourself into those. It is rarely about your website being worse. It is about your absence from third-party sources.

Find the actual source

Ask the assistant the same question with browsing on and request its sources. You will usually get a handful of URLs: a best-of listicle, a review site, a trade publication, sometimes a Reddit thread. Those are the pages doing the work.

Your website is rarely one of them. Models are reluctant to recommend a brand purely on that brand’s own claims about itself.

Get into the sources

This is outreach work rather than SEO. Contact the publishers of those listicles and make the case for inclusion. Many update annually and actively want current entries. Some have submission processes. Some want a genuine reason your product belongs.

Review platforms matter more than most brands expect, because they carry structured, comparable, third-party language that models can lift confidently.

Then fix the confusability

If your category description is vague, a model cannot place you. Say precisely what you do, for whom, in which market, in the same words everywhere. Brands that describe themselves differently on every platform give the model nothing solid to hold.

Quick answers

Can I ask the model to correct itself?

Corrections in a chat do not persist and do not affect other users. The only durable fix is changing what the sources say.

Does having more content help?

Only if it earns citations. Publishing more pages nobody references does not change what a model believes about your category.
