What TikTok actually documents
TikTok publishes For You feed eligibility standards describing content that stays on the platform while being kept out of recommendations. Its wording is that TikTok makes ineligible for the FYF certain content that may not be suitable for a broad audience. That is a real mechanism with a published list behind it, which makes it far more useful to a brand than a word TikTok has never used.
The causes on that list are mostly mundane. Reproduced or unoriginal content imported or uploaded without any new or creative edits. Content with someone else’s visible watermark or superimposed logo. Low quality content such as extremely short clips or exclusively GIF based videos. Marketing content that is not disclosed using the content disclosure setting. Fake engagement, which the standards describe as content that tricks or manipulates others to increase engagement metrics. Exporting a finished Reel with the Instagram watermark still burned into the corner is the version almost every brand does at some point.
The account level version, which you can see in the app
There is an account level restriction and TikTok describes it openly. A newsroom post explains that TikTok can make an entire account temporarily ineligible for recommendation in the For You feed where a creator repeatedly posts content against the standards. The same post says their account and content will be harder to find in search, which is the thing people are reaching for when they say shadowban.
The important part is what follows. TikTok states that it will notify creators when their account has been restricted in this way and that they will be able to appeal. So before theorising, look. Account status is visible in the app. If nothing is showing and no notification arrived, the account is not restricted and the problem sits somewhere in the content or the offer.
What to check before you rebuild the creative
Work down the published list first, because it costs nothing. Is there another platform’s watermark anywhere in the frame. Is the commercial content disclosure setting switched on for every paid post. Has anybody ever bought views for this account. Are the clips long enough to be more than an extremely short clip. Every one of those sits on TikTok’s own ineligibility list, which makes it checkable rather than arguable.
Then read the traffic source in your analytics instead of staring at the view count. TikTok reports where viewers found a video, including the For You feed, search and your profile. A video with low For You feed traffic and healthy search traffic is behaving exactly as the standards describe. Low views on their own prove nothing, which TikTok says itself on the same page.
